Advocacy

In a world that is constantly changing, it is important to have role models who inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves. For the LGBTQIA+ community, many activists have fought tirelessly for our rights and progress. Here are some of the most famous and influential LGBTQIA+ activists who have made an impact on society:

Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. He served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1977 until his assassination in 1978. Milk was a strong advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and helped pass several groundbreaking laws that protected queer people from discrimination.

Today, many organizations continue Harvey Milk's legacy, such as the Harvey Milk Foundation and the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy.

Marsha P. Johnson was an African American transgender woman and a key figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. She was also a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front and the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries. Johnson was a vocal advocate for transgender rights and helped start the first-ever transgender support group in New York City.

Today, there is an organization called the Marsha P. Johnson Institute that works to empower and protect the rights of transgender people of color.

Sylvia Rivera was a Latina transgender woman and another key figure in the Stonewall uprising. She was also a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front and the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries. Rivera was a strong advocate for transgender rights and helped start several shelters and support groups for queer youth.

Rivera's work continues to be an inspiration for many activists today. The Sylvia Rivera Law Project works to guarantee full equality and civil rights for all people, regardless of their gender identity or expression.

These are just a few of the many LGBTQIA+ activists who have made an impact on society. Countless others have fought for our rights and progress, and we owe them a great debt of gratitude. Thank you for everything that you have done for us. We will continue to fight until we achieve full equality for all.
